Cycles and the Environment

At The College School, one of our core values is that it is our responsibility to live and work sustainably within our environmental and human community. Whether in our greenhouse and gardens, our biological sciences curriculum, wilderness adventure education trips, recycling efforts, or green construction, sustainability and environmental education lives throughout our school. 

One of the leading examples of this work can be seen through our Seventh Grade Environmental Innovations Theme. This trimester-long theme perfectly blends adventure, learning, and connection to the natural world, showcasing the importance of sustainability and human impact. Over the course of several weeks, students look at a variety of environmental topics, including global access to resources and solutions of various types for uses of energy and pollution.

Pedaling Prairies

As part of The College School’s theme curriculum, Middle School students embark on a capstone experience. This year’s Environmental Innovations theme included a biking adventure on the Katy Trail. 

The Katy Trail, a former rail corridor turned scenic pathway, stretches across Missouri, offering stunning views of nature and a unique way to experience the great outdoors. Our seventh graders embarked on a five-day biking adventure, covering miles of trail while engaging in hands-on learning about the environment.

Each day was filled with exploration and discovery, as students rode through open fields and alongside tranquil rivers. The rhythm of pedaling served not only as physical exercise but as a metaphor for the journey we all take toward understanding and caring for our environment. The excitement of the ride was palpable, with students learning about the ecosystems they passed and the impact of human activity on these fragile environments.

Connecting with Jamie at Weldon Springs

A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Weldon Springs Interpretive Center. Here, students were greeted by Jamie, a dedicated environmental educator with more than 15 years of experience connecting with students from The College School. Jamie gave the class a site tour that focused on the contaminant disposal process, continual testing of the site to ensure safety, and the repurposing/beautification of the site for public use and education.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The interactions with Jamie and the experiences along the Katy Trail reinforced the notion that education extends beyond traditional classrooms. The real-world connections made during this trip were invaluable. Students learned about local flora and fauna, conservation efforts, and the significance of the natural landscape in Missouri’s history and culture.

Through hands-on activities, such as identifying plant species and discussing wildlife conservation, students gained a deeper appreciation for the environment. They also participated in group discussions about the importance of sustainability, renewable resources, and the impact of climate change. This dialogue was not just informative; it encouraged students to think critically about their personal choices and the collective responsibility we share.

A Night to Remember

The adventure culminated in a memorable closing ceremony that included a night hike. As darkness fell, students set out to explore the trails under the stars. The sky was a breathtaking spectacle, with the Aurora Borealis dancing in the northern sky while a glowing power plant illuminated the southern horizon. This striking juxtaposition served as a powerful visual reminder of the intersection between nature and human development.

During the night hike, students reflected on their journey, sharing insights and personal stories from the week. They discussed how the experiences on the Katy Trail had changed their perspectives on environmental issues and their roles in the community. 

Cycling Toward Sustainability

The Seventh Grade bike trip on the Katy Trail exemplified The College School’s Environmental Innovations theme in action. By combining physical activity, real-world experiences, and meaningful conversations about the environment, we provided our students with an unforgettable opportunity for growth and learning.

As we reflect on this adventure, we are reminded that our relationship with the environment is cyclical. Just as we cycle through life, our actions have consequences that echo through the ecosystem. At The College School, we strive to instill a sense of responsibility and urgency in our students, encouraging them to become active participants in the movement toward sustainability.
